The typical neck pain sufferer has a desk job or other daily tasks that involve prolonged sitting. This will distort your posture over time and lead to forward head posture.
The neck muscles have to work a lot harder to keep your head upright and this leads to tight and fatigued neck muscles. Sometimes it can result in bulging disc in the neck, that may give nerve symptoms like pins and needles or weakness in the arm or shoulder.
Neck pain can also be caused by trauma like a whiplash or sporting injuries. Traumatic neck injuries can often be accompanied by a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). In the case of a traumatic neck injury, there will likely be sprains and strains of structures in your neck. Ankle sprains will often be accompanied by balance and strengthening exercises. A neck sprain/strain can benefit from a similar principles of rehab, although the methods will obviously be different.
